Do you know if the broadband cable modem RCA DCM425 has memory? We would
like to load software (shareware or otherwise) onto the modem, to have it

Hi Patrick,

There's not a lot you can do with a plain modem. Invest in a router - that
will give you DHCP.

There's not a lot you can do with a plain modem. Invest in a router -
that will give you DHCP.

Actually many cable modems have a lot of capability, whether QoS / bandwidth
throttling, firewall, etc.

The question is not whether it has memory (of course it does), or even
whether the firmware can be flash-upgraded. The question is whether the
firmware is locked down by the manufacturer or Linux-based. If it's Linux
based, then you can force the manufacturer to give you a copy of the build
image so you can add software with the features you need. Otherwise you're
most likely out of luck, even if it is reasonably programmable, most
manufacturers won't give you what you need to make changes unless forced to
by the GPL.

Of course even with devices using Linux, the manufacturer may lie and tell
you you're only allowed to use their fireware images.
